What you will study

Take just five Chemistry program courses and gain the strong foundation you’ll need for numerous careers or advanced studies. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical properties that underlie biological processes as you take coursework in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

In addition to these foundational topics, you’ll choose an elective that best aligns with your personal interests and career goals. Popular options include Biochemistry, Instrumental Analysis and Quantitative Analysis.

Unique learning opportunities in chemistry

Our Chemistry minor gives you a strong foundation that sets you up for success here on campus, in grad school and in your career. As you learn more about general and organic chemistry, you’ll also benefit from hands-on experiences through:

  • Internships: Many Chemistry minors have pursued internships in the Kansas City area and beyond — helping them stand out professionally and as they pursue various graduate and professional schools.
  • Student activities: Many of our Chemistry minors take part in the Pre-Health and Pre-Vet clubs, as well as our student chapter for the American Chemical Society (ACS). Our ACS club offers social outings, advising sessions, service-learning opportunities and leadership roles that are great additions to your resume.
  • Research pursuits: All our faculty members are active researchers. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with them as they work to advance the chemistry field. Our faculty are currently researching sequence-stability relationships in biological molecules (e.g., RNA, proteins), gold nanomaterial synthesis and characterization, inorganic synthesis of metal-protein model systems and much more.

What can you do with a Chemistry minor from UCM?

Adding a Chemistry minor to your undergraduate studies will help you stand out as you pursue careers in biology and bioinformatics. Our graduates have also gone on to attend professional schools of dentistry, health care, medicine, ophthalmology, pharmacy and veterinary medicine at prestigious institutions.
