Accountants are financial specialists involved in all areas of business. With a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accountancy from the University of Central Missouri, you’ll be a professional who could work with individuals, companies of all sizes, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

What you will study

The University of Central Missouri’s Bachelor of Accounting degree program curriculum prepares you to be career-ready upon graduation. As a major in Accounting, you’ll take undergraduate courses in financial accounting, individual and corporate tax law, accounting information systems and managerial accounting. Other courses you could take include:

  • Accounting Analytics: Analyze data with industry standard software like Tableau and Excel.
  • Auditing: Develop your understanding of financial statement audits.
  • Advanced Accounting: Learn accounting for nonprofits and governmental entities, which offer great career opportunities for Accounting majors.

Classes taught by diverse and experienced faculty

All program faculty hold licenses as CPAs, CMAs or attorneys and bring extensive real-world experience to the program and classroom. They regularly publish in accounting and academic journals and attend academic and professional conferences for school of accountancy professionals.

As an Accounting major at the University of Central Missouri, you’ll get real-world experience and preparation for your career, even before your first job in accounting:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): Every year, Accounting program faculty and students provide free tax preparation services to other UCM students, staff and community members. Each student undergoes training and certification exams to volunteer and learn how to provide excellent client service while gaining real experience working with real people.
  • Internships: Most students who major in Accounting at UCM complete an internship, gaining real-world professional experiences and earning both college credit and pay. You could work for accounting firms, both big and small. Some of our undergraduate students have also worked for governmental organizations. We have a dedicated internship director who works hard to find internship opportunities that align with your goals and interests.
  • More than just the fundamentals: Beyond a strong foundation in accounting, UCM will equip you with the skills and confidence to stand out in your office and the boardroom.
  • Make connections: UCM Accounting majors build strong relationships with each other, faculty and professionals. Our students regularly come back to campus for the annual Meet the Firms event and awards banquet. There you can make connections to help you land your dream job with an Accounting degree.
