What you will study

Much like a web developer degree, you’ll take core coursework in computer programming, data structures, operating systems, programming languages and more. Unlike a web development degree, though, you’ll choose from dozens of electives to specialize your Computer Networking degree in cloud computing, systems design, software development and other fields. This flexibility helps set the University of Central Missouri apart from other programs. Choose from topics in client-side and server-side web programming, computer systems administration and web applications security.

UCM’s Computer Networking degree offers much more than web development degrees by balancing both hardware and software aspects of computer networks. You’ll learn the latest technologies to develop web applications, plus how to make them secure.

During your final year, you will collaborate with other Software Development and Software Engineering students on a substantial project in a capstone course. Working with our industry partners, you will apply the knowledge and skills you’ve learned and pursue a real-world project related to computer networking and cloud computing. Your project might involve group dynamics, ethical and professional responsibility or another topic you’re interested in.

They’ll help you pursue research that interests you — whether it’s through independent study, 1-on-1 classes or a collaborative research project. It’s our goal for you to take what you’ve learned from our degree in Computer Networking and help advance our profession.
  • Internships: UCM has multiple industry partners that provide internships to students in computer science, cloud computing and web developer degree-related courses. These are great ways for you to gain valuable experience — and earn college credit — as you build your resume and skill set to increase your marketability for computer networking jobs.
  • Programming competitions: UCM Computer Networking majors compete against students from web development degree programs, cloud computing degrees and related computer science fields at other colleges and universities in programming competitions. You’ll have the chance to participate in the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) and 48-hour Code-A-Thons. We also host on-campus Game Jams for students in all Computer Science programs. These events challenge your expertise, help you solve problems alongside your classmates and give you valuable experience.
  • Study abroad: France, Germany and the Netherlands are just a few locations where you could study abroad. You’ll gain a new perspective as you immerse yourself in another culture while taking classes that help you earn your Computer Networking degree. The University of Central Missouri offers study abroad scholarships and grants, so you may also be able to get financial aid to help pay for your travels.
