Fiona Slaughter is a double reed specialist who teaches oboe and bassoon in UCMO’s woodwind methods course. Residing in Kansas City, Slaughter has an active performing and private teaching career. She is the principal English horn player in the Springfield Symphony, and she has performed in many local groups including the Midwest Chamber Ensemble, Missouri Philharmonic, and Pinnacle Winds. Slaughter maintains a studio of private oboe students and enjoys teaching at local schools.

In the past, Slaughter performed with the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, Arkansas Philharmonic, and the Fort Smith Symphony. In 2018, Slaughter was selected as the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas Young Artist, performing the first movement of the Mozart Oboe Concerto with the orchestra.

An avid traveler, in 2024 Slaughter looks forward to premiering a new duet for English horn and bassoon by Yunfei Li at the SHE Festival in Fayetteville, AR, and participating in a conference presentation by Theresa Delaplain in Paris, France. Slaughter’s past performing experiences also include the Pacific Region International Music Academy, British Isles Music Festival, European American Musical Alliance, Prague Summer Nights Festival and Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival. She has also attended and performed in masterclasses at International Double Reed Society Conferences in Spain and Florida.

Having completed coursework towards a Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in 2024 Slaughter is researching, transcribing, and performing French mélodies and new music by her classmates for her dissertation projects. Slaughter studies oboe with Celeste Johnson and bassoon with Leigh Muñoz. She previously earned oboe performance degrees at the University of Michigan and the University of Arkansas under the tutelage of Nancy Ambrose King and Theresa Delaplain. Her talent for studying earned her a National Merit Scholarship, Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship, and Honors College Fellowship as an undergraduate.

In her spare time, Slaughter enjoys learning new languages, reading nonfiction, and conversing with open-minded friends at the UMKC Writing Studio.
