Theatre Minor

The Theatre minor at the University of Central Missouri will diversify your skill set and enhance your major area of study. Whether you’re interested in learning what the performing arts can do to improve your professional skills or you simply want to polish your acting and production abilities, the Theatre minor is a great choice for you.

UCM’s Theatre minor program curriculum offers conservatory-based training in a liberal arts environment. Our program, however, goes beyond acting studies and includes classes with experienced faculty in stagecraft, sound and lighting design and theatre production. You’ll hone your performance skills while learning how to plan and carry out professional performances using the latest production technologies and techniques.

Enhance your major with a Theatre minor

Regardless of your major or career aspirations, UCM’s minor in Theatre will advance your public speaking, critical thinking, presentation and organizational skills, which will benefit you after graduation. You’ll also develop a strong work ethic and self-discipline — highly valued qualities in any field. UCM undergraduates preparing for careers in teaching, research, business and marketing, for example, can greatly benefit from courses in theatre.

Unique learning opportunities in Theater

At the University of Central Missouri, we offer our Theatre minors many hands-on and extracurricular activities that will help you put the skills you’ve learned in the classroom to work in real-world scenarios:

  • Classroom projects: You’ll complete classroom projects alongside peers and faculty members to bolster your acting and theatre production skills — and to ensure you’re getting the most out of the undergraduate program. You'll have opportunities to direct scenes performed by your peers and work together in the scene shop to build sets for UCM mainstage productions.
  • Performance and design technology: Take advantage of dozens of performances each semester, including UCM’s Black Box Theatre productions, mainstage plays, musicals and other performances across campus. You’ll act, write, produce and perform alongside your fellow students and professors to produce professional-level stage productions that continue to raise the bar of excellence at UCM.
  • Student clubs: Practice your performance and improvisational skills alongside your colleagues in the Shenanigans Improv Troupe. You can also stretch your legs in UCM’s student Dance Club, which offers a variety of opportunities to practice your craft outside of class and spend leisure time with other theatre and dance students.
  • Production teams and planning: Explore what goes on behind the scenes in the theatre world by joining student teams in charge of performances on campus. Roles within these teams, including positions in public relations, marketing, fundraising, digital media, sound and lighting and more, give you hands-on experience while diversifying your skill set and complementing your major area of study.
