Music Minor

Nurture your passion for music while pursuing other areas of study with a Music minor from the University of Central Missouri. You’ll study with world-renowned Music faculty in state-of-the-art facilities to develop your skills as a musician. Advance your skills in choral, concert or jazz music, and get an introduction to commercial music or music technology if desired. You will also find a Music minor pairs well with undergraduate degrees such as Business or Theatre, preparing you for careers including performance artist, theater manager or music agent.

Whether you excelled in music during high school or you’re just finding your sound, UCM’s Music minor gives you access to expert musicians — scholars, instrumentalists, vocalists and music technologists — and a variety of performance opportunities.

State-of-the-art facilities

Our music facilities house two performance halls, recently upgraded practice areas and our impressive collection of professional-grade instruments:

  • All of our pianos are made by Steinway
  • Expansive percussion instrumentation
  • UCM is a Conn-Selmer school, with a large collection of high-quality instruments
  • Access to the same audio production tools used by professional studios in Los Angeles, Nashville, New York and Chicago

What you will study

As a Music minor at UCM, you’ll have access to the same faculty, facilities and quality coursework as Music majors. You’ll develop your music knowledge alongside other Music students in classes such as:

  • Music History
  • Music Theory
  • Aural Training
  • Electives in Music

Following an audition, you’ll also hone your skills by taking private performance lessons in voice and any instrument we offer — even laptop performance — and participating in ensembles. Grow your appreciation for different types of music styles by attending on-campus recitals and concerts.

Two electives will round out your minor coursework. Choose from a wide variety of courses that include Fundamentals of Music Technology, Jazz-Rock Combo or Composition. You may instead decide to devote this time to additional private lessons or ensembles.
