As a minor in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Central Missouri, you’ll
study major social, religious and political events and how they’ve shaped the hot-button
issues affecting the region. From the origins of Christianity, Islam and Judaism to
the Syrian Civil War and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, our program gives you the

- Nance Middle East Collection: Satisfy a research interest specific to the Middle East with the help of the Nance
Middle East Collection. One of five notable collections housed in UCM’s McClure Archives,
this collection of Middle Eastern artifacts and art is one of the nation’s most extensive.
- Study abroad: Take advantage of first-hand study abroad opportunities under the guidance of UCM
professors. UCM offers a 2.5-week program in Jordan and Israel, and our students can
enroll in a four-week program in Tunisia to learn more about ongoing transitions in
Africa. We also offer a Divided Cities program focused on topics including the political,
religious and cultural divides in Jerusalem, Berlin and Kansas City.

Dr. Makara teaches several classes focused on topics in the Middle East. He also leads
the Jordan and Israel study abroad program every year. You’ll benefit from his vast
knowledge of Middle Eastern studies, teaching expertise and long history of mentoring
students seeking to broaden their understanding of the Middle East.

Meet Dr. Amber Clifford-Napoleone
Anthropology and museum science expert
Dr. Clifford-Napoleone, Anthropology professor and past McNair scholar, serves as
director of UCM’s McClure Archives and University Museum, where she applies her expertise
in museum anthropology to maintain the Nance Middle East Collection. She welcomes
the opportunity to share her knowledge of Middle Eastern artifacts with you.
