Mathematics

When you study Mathematics at the University of Central Missouri, you’ll benefit from in-depth exposure to both real-world and creative aspects of this fascinating science, which is key to understanding the modern world. UCM graduates with a thorough understanding of mathematics work in fields as diverse as chemistry, engineering, biology, physics, computer science, economics, finance, education and every other imaginable area. Whether you prefer to approach your studies as a creative art or to focus on logical inductions and deductions, the science of numbers and patterns is a fascinating and essential part of our lives.

Mathematics faculty are deeply committed to helping you excel — in the classroom and in your career. Not only do most hold Ph.D.s, but they’re also active as researchers in their field. Our small class sizes offer UCM students the opportunity to work closely with faculty on research projects and other career-building opportunities.

UCM Mathematics offers several undergraduate and graduate program options

  • Mathematics undergraduate programs: Apply critical, analytical and logical thinking to a wide range of problems in many fields of study. These skills will make you a viable candidate in areas such as actuarial science, statistics, mathematics education and computer science.
  • Mathematics graduate programs: Deepen the knowledge gained from your bachelor’s degree program. Once you have a master’s degree, you can continue on to pursue a Ph.D., work in government or industry or teach dual credit in high school or at the college level. Our synchronous teaching format is lifestyle-friendly, helping you maintain your current job while earning your advanced degree.

Find your Mathematics future at UCM

To help you achieve your personal career goals, you’ll have opportunities to gain hands-on experiences such as:

  • In-depth research: Working under the guidance of our UCM faculty and graduate assistants, you may complete a research study or graduate thesis related to your particular interest area.
  • Student organizations and networking: UCM Mathematics faculty are members of the Mathematical Association of America. Each year, we travel with our students to another university in Missouri to compete and network with other state institutions. Members of Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME), a national mathematics honor society, accompany faculty to regional and national meetings every year. Interning with companies — which regularly hire our graduates — is another avenue to a successful future as a UCM Mathematics student.
  • Faculty advising: Mathematics students benefit from the services offered by the UCM Career and Life Design Office, as well as individualized attention from our faculty. We often receive recruitment requests from hiring companies and share them with our students.

What can you do with a degree in one of UCM’s Mathematics programs?
