Actuarial Science
The Actuarial Science program at the University of Central Missouri apply mathematics and statistics to real-world situations. This exciting interdisciplinary training is used to evaluate risks in the insurance, financial, health care, government and business sectors. As a UCM student, you’ll learn to predict the future and conduct risk management evaluations to help companies make informed decisions.
Our UCM faculty members are all Ph.D. researchers and seasoned professionals with credentials from the Society of Actuaries (SOA). They have a wealth of experience and solid connections with potential employers, and will guide you individually and in small group settings as you work to achieve your career goals.
Actuarial Science offers undergraduate and graduate program options:
- Actuarial Science and Statistics - Actuarial Science Option: This undergraduate program will prepare you to become an actuary for financial institutions, government agencies and insurance companies. By your second or third year, you’ll be ready to take the SOA preliminary exams, and our Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) courses will add to your preparation for various other professional opportunities.
- Mathematics: Concentrate your graduate studies in Actuarial Science and Statistics to specialize your study of applied mathematics. You’ll strenghten your problem solving and data analytical skills and how to apply this knowledge to succeed in government, business or industrial careers.
UCM Actuarial Science students who meet GPA requirements are eligible to apply for the accelerated BS in Actuarial Science and Statistics/MS in Mathematics – Actuarial Science and Statistics option, which can be completed in five years.

Find your Actuarial Science future at UCM
You’ll study a variety of actuarial models and learn to use software programs and other research tools to create targeted assessments and address real-world problems:
- Professional guidance and networking: The curriculum for UCM’s advanced program in Actuarial Science prepares you to take the SOA examinations to become an actuary. The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) sends representatives to our campus to help students learn more about career options in the casualty area. Both of these organizations invite UCM students and faculty, as well as employers and alumni, to meetings and events held on campus and throughout the region.
- Hands-on experience and internships: Study and analyze the most current data and topics in the actuarial area using the latest software, including R, Python and SAS. UCM hosts the Actuarial Career Fair annually in the fall that offers opportunities to get internships, interview with potential employers and network with students from other universities.
