Scholarships

Scholarships for the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Studies provide financial assistance for students that are interested in pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in the areas of anthropology, sociology and social studies. Please use the links below to learn more about specific applications and qualifications for each scholarship.

Sociology

C. James Britton Scholarship:

The C. James Britton Scholarship is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree within the Department of Sociology. This scholarship is made possible by way of gifts from friends and colleagues of James Britton upon his retirement from the University of Central Missouri. A student must be full-time pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree within Sociology or Social Work and have earned a minimum of 90 credit hours by the time of application. Must have earned a minimum of 9 credit hours if a graduate student with a 3.75 GPA.

 

Dr. Billy Hu Scholarship in Global Structures and Societies

The Dr. Billy Hu Sociology and Social Gerontology Scholarship is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for a Senior, majoring in one of the following majors: Sociology, International Studies, Modern Languages, Global Security Studies, International Business, World Languages and Cultures, or one of the following minors: Modern Languages, Middle Eastern Studies, International Studies, World Languages and Cultures, Africana Studies and have completed the required essay prompt.

First preference will be given to Sociology or International Studies Majors.

 

Dr. J. Mark Wehrle Sociology & Social Work Scholarship

The Dr. J. Mark Wehrle Scholarship for Sociology and Social Work is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing pursuing a degree in Sociology or Social Work. Sociology students must have a declared major of Sociology and Social Work students must have been accepted into the Social Work program. Students should have at least 75 hours completed, a 3.4 grade point average in all coursework, and complete an essay specific to this scholarship to apply. This scholarship is made possible by Dr. Mark Wehrle of Lake Ozark, MO.

 

Dr. Riley and Janet Pittman Scholarship

The Dr. Riley and Janet Pittman Scholarship is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for students pursuing a degree in Sociology. The student must demonstrate financial need and have a grade point average of 2.8 or above in their major coursework. This scholarship is made possible by Mark Pittman, in honor of his parents.

 

The Launa Boston Scholarship

The Launa Boston Scholarship has been established with the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for a graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology. The ideal candidate will have a minimum grade point average of 3.25. This gift is made possible by Danny Boston.

 

Sociology Scholarship Fund

The Sociology scholarship fund is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for students pursuing degree work within the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Studies. Criteria determined at the department; enquire for details.

 

We also offer the Riley H. Pittman Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Sociology that is faculty nominated (students do not apply for this award). Criteria are based on excellence in class-related activities, quality oral and written work, good leadership skills, and a belief that the student will represent UCM well in their chosen profession.


Anthropology

Anthropology Scholarship Fund

The Anthropology Scholarship fund is set up with the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for students pursuing a major of Anthropology. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the department; enquire for details.

 

Sheets & Stevenson Anthropology Scholarship

The Sheets & Stevenson Anthropology Scholarship is provided by the UCM Alumni Foundation for a student majoring or minoring in anthropology at the University of Central Missouri and be in academic good standing.


Social Studies

Paul Rorvig Memorial Scholarship

The Paul Rorvig Memorial scholarship was established with the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation by Paul and Vickie Rorvig to provide financial assistance for future social studies teachers during their semester of student teaching. The qualified candidate will be a social studies major with a 3.0 grade point average and must submit an essay. This scholarship is for the semester of student teaching.
