What you will study

UCM’s Construction Management degree program emerged in the 1970s in response to a need in the industry for true technologists — construction managers who could build as well as design and manage.

Now one of the oldest and best construction management schools in the region, the University of Central Missouri has trained generations of students like you to be efficient, confident managers of office and field work across all sectors of the construction industry.

Coursework for your bachelor’s degree in Construction Management may include:

  • Project Cost Estimating: Learn the critical skill of surveying materials and requirements, including productivity standards, to estimate the cost of industrial construction projects.
  • Engineering Geology: A Construction Management degree should give you the tools to understand how the ground you build on affects other aspects of construction. Learn relevant physical geology such as hydrogeology, waste disposal, slope stability, mapping and site characterization.
  • Commercial Architectural Design/Drafting: Study and develop commercial architectural plans and drawings using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) techniques, including building information modeling (BIM).

Unique learning opportunities in construction management

The best way to learn what construction management is by doing. You’ll be able to apply your growing knowledge and practical skills with hands-on experiences, including:

  • Skills- and experience-based labs: Your UCM Construction Management degree is not a trades program, but it’s essential to good management to know and be able to perform some skilled tradesperson tasks. Some classes include labs that build technical skills such as using specialized software or helping construct a steel building.
  • Internships: Gain invaluable real-world experience in between semesters, beginning with the break between your freshman and sophomore year.
  • Student Organization of Construction Managers (SOCM): Build lasting friendships and professional connections through involvement with this active student group. You and your peers will gain valuable experience through school and community projects and with trips to industry events such as the Building Industry Expo.
  • Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Competition: Members of SOCM and UCM faculty collaborate each year on the ASC Student Management Competition in Nebraska City, NE. Teams must prepare complete estimates, schedules, cash flow projections, safety plans and more for real-world projects. As a participant, you’ll compete with 16 of the best construction management schools in the region.
